ITINERARY

1

DAY 1: Arrive at Srinagar. Depart from Srinagar and drive to Sonamarg base camp (7,800 ft /4 hrs).

From the airport drive to Sonamarg, stopping for lunch on the way. Overnight in tents.
2

DAY 2: Sonamarg to Nichnai (11,500 ft)

3 hour ascent followed by 1 hour descent and finally a gentle ascent to Nichnai (9 km, 7 hours)
The trek starts 3 kms out of Sonamarg, on the Srinagar road and goes down to the Sindh river. It then bends left and enters a green meadow, directly overlooking the Sonamarg town. In half an hour you are at the top of the meadow where Maple and Pine trees start. The climb is now over and the trail slopes down into a 40-foot wide meadow. Small brooks crisscross the meadow. The gentle descent on the meadow ends in a forest of Bhoj or Silver Birch. The trail goes down and climbs back into a river valley which is the beginning of Nichnai. The trail now is along the right bank of the river going upstream. The first 30 minutes is over rocks and your mules will walk very slowly over here.
An hour into the river valley green patches devoid of rocks open up. The river valley widens and you can see the green meadow widening in between the two mountain ranges. Overnight in tents.

DAY 3: Nichnai to Vishansar Lake (12,500 ft)

Medium climb to Nichnai pass 13,500 ft. Small descent followed by a long flat meadow walk ending near Vishansar Lake. (12 kms, 7 hours)
Our day begins with a climb over Nichnai Pass (13,500 ft). It is a day of variety with a river crossing and our first small lake of this trek. BSNL phone network tends to work here most times. We descend rapidly to be amongst mountain pasture land again, with Mount Vishu on the left and river crossing again at the start of the meadows. Vishansar is the lake of Lord Vishnu, and is a kilometer long and half a kilometer wide, this lake is the main source of the Neelum River. Great views make this a brilliant day – a waterfall, mountains, alpine flowers littering the meadows, as we camp by the stream fed by the lake. Overnight in tents.

Steep 2 hour ascent followed by a steep descent followed a gentle walk in the meadows. (10 kms, 8 hrs)
Today we trek to Kishansar, with a steep ascent which provides great overview of Kishansar and Vishansar lakes together, as we climb towards the Gadsar Pass. This is the highest point on the trek. We descend to a meadow with irises littered all over the hillside. We camp 4-5 km below Gadsar Lake near the army camp. Overnight in tents.
