India is a land of many wonders. Big expanses of the country have not been explored. You will be amazed at the number of places you have not heard of and unsurprisingly, each of these places has a unique appeal which will not be found elsewhere in the world. Everyone should have these places in their bucket list. They say youth is wasted on the young, don’t let this cliché rule you. Go on, get out and explore the great outdoors. Here is a list of places in India you absolutely must visit before you reach middle age.
Gokarna, Karnataka
Are you tired of the mindless hoards of people in Goa? Dirty beaches and unruly people keeping you away from the sea? Gokarna is the new beach haunt of party people. The beaches are clean, the locals are friendly and the drinking never stops.
Andamans, Andaman and Nicobar Islands
What was once the site of the infamous Kalapani prison, is now a tourist spot known for its rich history and mesmerizing marine life. Grab your scuba gear and witness all that beauty firsthand. The corals are inviting you. Dive in!
Roopkund, Uttarakhand
This trek is definitely not for the fainthearted; it is a high-altitude trek that leads to a shallow lake atop a mountain. The strangest thing about Roopkund is the multitude of human skeletons at the base of the lake. Only during the summer months are the skeletons visible when the snow melts. The trek itself is very difficult over rough terrain and treacherous slopes. Locals consider the site to be cursed. You have been warned, wanderer.
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
Situated near the Garhwal foothills, Rishikesh is the place to be for all you adrenalin junkies. The Ganges is at its fiercest at Rishikesh and the place offers river rafting with grade 5 rapids and bungee jumping off a sheer cliff face. It is also a peaceful haven for yoga followers and the beautiful ashrams all around are proof of this. Rishikesh offers a brilliant mix of both. Definitely not something you’d want to do at the earliest.
Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan
Bhangarh is a fort city in Rajasthan. It is considered the most haunted place in India and has an appropriate history behind it. Legend goes that the entire population of the city was killed in one night. The rumor of the haunting is so widespread that the government has forbidden entry into the fort at night. There is even a signboard at the entrance, explicitly forbidding visitors from entering the fort. Again, not a place for the faint hearted.
As St Augustine said, “The World is a book, and those who do not rravel read only one page.” What are you waiting for?
