The Ganges is considered the most sacred river in India. The legend is that the Goddess Ganga descended on Earth from heaven at Gangotri. There is a temple at Gangotri dedicated to Mother Ganges. The actual source of The Ganges lies 19 km from Gangotri at Gaumukh. The trek follows the river upstream to the actual source at Gaumukh. The tour starts from the holy city of Rishikesh, known as ‘Gateway to Himalayas’. This exiting trek offers fantastic view of beautiful mountains like Shivling (6543 m), Meru and the Bhagirathi group of mountains.

DAY 1: DELHI-HARIDWAR, DRIVE TO UTTARKASHI (1,150 m/3,773 ft)

We take the Mussoorie Express to Haridwar station (05.45 am). Pick up and drive (165 km) to Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi is the base of many trekking and mountaineering expeditions in the Gangotri valley. India’s premier mountaineering institute ‘Nehru Mountaineering Institute’ is situated at here. In the afternoon we proceed for a sightseeing tour of Uttarkashi including the famous Vishwanath temple. Overnight stay at a hotel.

DAY 2: UTTARKASHI TO GANGOTRI (3,048 m/10,000 ft)

Gangotri is the place where the Goddess Ganga descended on earth from heaven. It’s also the starting point for the trekking in the Gangotri valley. Visit the temple of Goddess Ganga and also visit many holy sages in their caves. Overnight stay in tourist lodge.

DAY 3: GANGOTRI TO BHOJWASA (3,600 m/ 11,811 ft – 14 km)

Our trek begins and we follow the river Bhagirathi, surrounded by divine mountain scenery. The trek is a gradual ascent for the most part. From Bhojwasa we have majestic views of the Bhagirathi group of peaks. On arrival set-up camp for overnight stay.

DAY 4: BHOJWASA TO TAPOVAN (4400 m/ 14,520 ft - 10 km), VIA GAUMUKH

We trek to Tapovan via Gaumukh, the source of river Ganges. From Gaumukh we climb over to Gangotri glacier and cross it from right to left bank before climbing over to lateral moraine to reach Tapovan. Tapovan is a large high-altitude meadow and base camp for climbing Mt Shivling and Mt Meru. It is famous for meditation also. Overnight stay in tents.

DAY 5: ACCLAIMATIZATION AT TAPOVAN

We enjoy this day relaxing or with a visit to Meru glacier and Neela Tal. Stay in Tapovan.

DAY 6: TAPOVAN TO CHEERBASA (3,600 m/11,811 ft - 16 km)

After breakfast we trek down to Cheerbasa. Overnight camp.

DAY 7: CHEERBASA TO DHARALI (2,620 m/8,595 ft - 9 km trek, 25km drive)

After breakfast we trek to Gangotri. From here we drive 25km to Dharali. Stay in a guesthouse. Dharali is a very beautiful village popular for apple orchards and amazing views.

DAY 8: DRIVE DHARALI TO HARIDWAR-FINAL DEPARTURE

We return to Rishikesh/Haridwar by car to catch night train to Delhi.
